Friends schools have something special to offer their communities -- excellent academics in the context of important spiritual and moral values. Friends Meeting School is the sixth Friends school in Maryland and the only one in Frederick County. Located on 54 acres of rolling land on Green Valley Road (Route 75) in southern Frederick County, the school is a few miles from two major interstates--I-70 and I-270.
The school opened in 1997 in the rented space of the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church with 13 students ranging from four-year-olds to 6th graders. The school grew rapidly as it purchased 54 acres of land and constructed two buildings that provide eight classrooms including a science lab, library, computer lab, art room, and an all-purpose room.
Friends Meeting School currently serves over 100 students from 3 years of age through 8th grade. In addition to an outstanding set of classroom teachers, students meet on a regular basis with special subject teachers in Spanish, art, music and drama, computer, and physical education. Students are grouped in one of eight classes covering a two year age span. The school is organized into three divisions with the following target class sizes:
Early Childhood (3 to 5-year-olds)
Pre-K (3 and 4-year-olds) 15 children with teacher and aide
Early Childhood (Pre-K and K) 16 children with teacher and aide
Elementary (1st to 4th grade) 18 students to a class
Intermediate/Middle School (5th to 8th grade) 18 students to a class
A high school will be added in the future, but the time table for this has not been established at this writing.
