Welcome to Friends Meeting School!

What can be more important for our children than the education we provide for them? Both within and beyond classroom walls, our children spend their formative years acquiring a vast array of skills, knowledge, attitudes, value systems, and habits for better or worse. What counts is what kind of persons our children become as a result of their formative experiences. Our mission at Friends Meeting School is to foster not just academic excellence but human excellence.

Our academic program is strong. Year-end standardized test scores in reading, language, math, and science consistently show significantly more progress among our students on average than among a nationwide sample of students
of the same grade level taking the same test. Our small classes, exceptional teachers, personalized caring attention, and our commitment to address the individual learning levels of each student facilitate this kind of success.

But our focus is broader than on the core subjects. Our special subject teachers add a unique richness to our program and allow our students to thrive in many areas.

  • Spanish classes for all ages broaden children’s cultural perspectives and help them develop a foreign language skill when their brains are particularly receptive developmentally. Student and teacher exchanges with our sister school in Guatemala enrich all of us.
  • Performing Arts classes lead to opportunities for every student to sing and act on stage. Recent community play performances at the Weinberg Center for the Arts in Frederick have brought glowing praise not only from proud parents but also from outside visitors.
Each year our Art teacher sees our students receive awards from county groups for the quality of their art work.
Our Physical Education and Body Development classes provide healthy physical activities for the students and we always see an impressive dance performance at the end of each year involving whole class choreographies.
  • Our Computer classes help students become every more tech savvy and computer competent in our computer lab as they move through the grades.

All the above is still not sufficient in our vision of human excellence. Central to our school’s existence is the time we set aside each day to focus attention on the social, emotional and spiritual development of our students. Our monthly spiritual themes and focus on peace skills have twice resulted in our being named Maryland Character Education School of the Year.

We invite you to explore the rest of our web site for more information. Even better, give us a call and schedule a visit. Come see why students thrive here!

Yours for a better world,

Annette Breiling
Head of School
