Student Government
Following in the tradition of a vibrant Student Government Association (SGA) at Friends Meeting School, the 2010 - 2011 SGA promises to provide students a meaningful, hands-on experience with student governance.
We have adopted an SGA Constitution that provides for a description of the function of the organization, including a detailed account of how meetings are to be conducted, and a description of the functions of elected officers. The preamble of the Constitution states:
We the members of the Student Government Association, administration,
and faculty of Friends Meeting School, in order to encourage a cooperative
spirit, develop constructive student leadership, and promote student well-being,
do hereby establish this constitution.
Meetings are held weekly during a Flex/Lunch time period. Meetings are open to all students, grades 5-10.
Students have been coached on the importance of student governance and the necessity of representing the views of students in deliberations with the school's administration, faculty and parents. Involvement in the SGA allows participants the opportunity to advocate for positions favored by the student body.
Every attempt will be made to structure SGA meetings in accordance with Quaker principles. For instance, rather than elect presidents and vice presidents, we elect clerks and assistant clerks.
From the SGA Constitution:
Meetings begin with a moment of silence. When the clerk judges the time
is right, he or she goes over the agenda before the meeting, provides any
necessary background information, and the lays the first draft minute before the meeting. People raise their hand to speak, one at a time. Each item concludes with the agreeing of a minute of the meeting's decision.
Assembled representatives work to agree on the minute until consensus is reached. We do so calmly, in a spirit of worship and mutual respect. |
