Special Dayssciencefair8

Throughout the school year there are many days during which we focus on a specific theme. Examples of these days are: Field Day, Science Day, Stewarship Day, Grandparents Day, Hispanic Heritage Day, and Young Authors Day.

Stewardship Day 2010

Stewardship Day is an annual tradition at FMS.  While performing tasks to care for our building and grounds we take the the time to appreciate part of the earth that has been placed in our stewardship.  In addition to the beautiful flower beds and woods at our school, we have a new food garden on our list of areas to tend.  Many classes are adopting one of the 26 beds we are building.

field12As part of a study of the life cycle of plants, the Pre-K class will be growing beans and putting up bean poles.  The Kindergarten and 1st graders will be planting a bed of corn and building a hoop structure.  The 2nd grade class is preparing their bed to plant the "three sisters" (corn, beans and pumpkins) as part of their Native Americans unit.  The 3rd and 4th graders are excited about planting an herb garden.  All of our elementary students will also be working on the beds behind their classrooms and doing a "trash-walk" around our grounds.

Middle and high school students have a big project ahead - a "gazebo raising"!  We are building a gazebo in the new garden that will serve as an outdoor classroom and worship space.  In the tradition of community barn raisings, we are planning on "many hands making light the work".
