Spiritual Life

Quaker Philosophy as a Guiding Principle at FMS

A fundamental belief of the Religious Society of Friends, known as Quakers, is that there is that of God in every person- that which knows right, is loving, is honest, has tremendous potential and power- that which is sacred. Many Friends call this divine spark the Inner Light. Friends Meeting School is dedicated to helping students seek guidance from, and expression of, that Inner Light. At Friends Meeting School, we are guided by this belief as we provide a strong education grounded in Quaker testimonies of simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality, and stewardship (SPICES). We are dedicated to helping students seek guidance from expression of that Inner Light.

FMS views the search for Truth as both an academic and spiritual endeavor.

We also recognize that the pace and style of learning is different for every child. Our teachers honor these differences by supporting all children and by placing importance on all aspects of learning: intellectual and physical development, social and emotional growth, creative expression, and spiritual awareness. We encourage students to be active participants in their own education by emphasizing critical thinking, learning through cooperation with others, making choices, and taking risks.

We aim to acheive this in a setting where academic work, artistic endeavor, physical development and all aspects of school life are strongly influenced by the Quaker testimonies.

At Friends Meeting School, we believe that education is a lifelong journey. We view learning as a process of exploration and self-discovery, through which children build skills and knowledge experientially by working with teachers and fellow students. When students experience respect, caring, and compassion from their teachers and peers, they themselves become compassionate, caring, and respectful of others. As we nurture that of God in every child, we strive to help each one develop confidence, imagination, compassion, and hope.

The outward expression of each person's Seeking is their Speaking — the way they live their lives. At Friends Meeting School we expect adults in the school community to serve as examples of lives that speak integrity and high moral standards. We expect the same of our students. As a part of this we created monthly themes:

  • That of God in me and in others
  • Competence
  • Caring
  • Courage
  • Honesty
  • Peace and Nonviolence
  • Stewardship
  • Simplicity and Love

Our intention is that students' Inner Lights will shine brightly throughout their lives.
